Growing up I watched my grandmother sit at the dining table with her scissors, cutting and gluing things as a kindergarten teacher. She made glue from tapioca flour. I can still smell and feel the warm gooey starch, and see the confetti of paper trimmings at her feet. I suppose that's why I like getting my hands dirty, working on coarse, unskilled handicraft. The torn paper collage was put together with tapioca starch and newspaper and magazine print, crepe and tissue paper.
